Social Media: Like Has Nothing to Do With Use

800 million Facebook users can’t be wrong. Social media is here and you don’t have to like it, but you’d better be using it.

If you don’t use social media you’re wasting money. It’s free and it’s addicting people of all ages. Many clients say they don’t want to be on Facebook but once there, can hardly turn away. So get online and get a page. And if you can’t do it, hire someone to build it and manage it for you. Your brand, product or service needs to be on Facebook. Now.

It’s estimated that media spending on social media and its management will match or exceed spending on paid search (SEO). While websites aren’t going away, quick and simple messages on social media are more easily accessed than websites.

Apps come and go. They update constantly. One problem with an App and users are off to find another one. They’re expensive to build and you need to be a programmer to forecast use. Yes, many are out there. But stick to what you know and what you understand.

People are on Facebook all day because it’s easy to use.

Millions follow Twitter for news, breaking stories and insights on sports, celebrities, and trends. Job hunters and posters alike are on LinkedIN and have been carrying conversations and making contacts without you.

Now, businesses are hiring and paying agencies to post social media for them with spending on social media reaching parity with paid search or SEO (search engine optimization).

Traditional media is gone. When was the last time you read any printed publication: magazine, newspaper, direct mail.

Smart phones are in the hands and the eyesight of anyone who’s using a phone these days.

So if you’re launching, relaunching or just marketing a business and want to spend on TV commercials your spots are being fast forwarded past. Few people watch live TV and if they do, they’re not wasting time on commercials.

Super Bowl commercials are it and no small or medium sized business can afford that. Super Bowl 2012 :30 spots now cost $3.5 to $4 million for 30 seconds.

Volkswagen will debut the 2012 VW Beetle in a new 60-second spot it hopes will top its Darth Vader spot of 2011.

Social media isn’t sounding so bad anymore is it? For those who aspire to be a household and worldwide name, you’d better try Facebook, LinkedIN or Twitter. You can’t afford not to.
